We woke up in the morning to the smell of a campfire and with the whole area blanketed in smokey haze. It appears there are significant brush fires burning throughout the area due to the drought conditions.
We spent most of the day touring around the old town part of St. Augustine. To get an overview, we went for a 90 minute tour tram ride around town which stopped at most of the historical sites and tourist traps. Temperatures were well into the 90's and humid.
After the tram ride, we did a brief walk about at Castillo de San Marcos National Monument.
We caught up with Brian and Joan on St. George St which is a pedestrian only street lined with shops and restaurants.
We ended up buying new sun hats and a parrot (his name is “Cracker Jack”).
It was a stuffed parrot and now lives in our cockpit!
We stopped for a great lunch at the Florida Cracker.
Chris and I went for a walk through Flagler College which was originally the Ponce de Leon Hotel. A very ornate and elegant building built by Henry Flagler in the 1800’s for his wealthy friends to visit.
We continued our walking tour of the oldest section of town taking in a number of the significant historic homes and architecture.
The Oldest House circa 1720
