We awoke to another nice sunny day with a light breeze. We had located an Internet café in the little shopping plaza next to the dock and we headed there for breakfast and to update e-mail and this blog. The breakfast and coffee were a great treat.
We untied from the dock at 09:55. There were some pretty impressive sport fisherman boats along the dock.
We headed out to the Hawk Channel which is the exposed outside route along the keys.
There was only a light chop and we travelled east on this route for 12 miles to Channel Five which provided access to the inside route along the keys.
The water here was dead flat and pristine in colour which really provided a perspective of how shallow it really is. Most of the time we only had a few feet of water under the propellers. Constant attention to the charts and GPS plotter were required.
Joan did spot a couple of rays swimming in one of the channels but I was not fast enough with the camera to get a picture.
There were a number of narrow cuts through reefs and mangrove marshes that have been made to provide the ICW route.
By 16:35 we were passing under the Hwy 1 bridge at Key Largo.
There was quite an eclectic collection of “live aboard” boats here. I’m sure some of them did not leave a forwarding address from where they came.
We continued on another 6 miles and anchored in the northeast corner of Barnes sound and were joined by some of the biggest flies we have ever seen.
We BBQ’d some steaks and had some wine to celebrate finally turning north.
